START UP A MOBILE ICE CREAM BUSINESS
STEP1. PLANNING
Where to trade continued So do your homework first, talk to residents and find out whether they
already have an ice cream van visit their street, check with your local council
who will advise whether they permit street trading in that area. Just because
you have never seen an ice cream van in the area before does not mean that one
does not service the area, bad press is not good for any business.
Whichever way you decide to operate your new
mobile ice cream business start by looking around your own local area. Some of
the main points to consider are:
Are there already numerous ice cream van owners operating their businesses in
your area? Do you feel there's a need for a ice cream outlet in any particular
location? Are there usually local objections from local residents and council's
(particularly in beauty spots and small villages)? What events are being held
every year in your area? Are they big events, small events? How far will you
have to travel with your ice cream van or trailer to your pitch every day?
After you've considered all the above points
and still feel that a ice cream seller is needed in your area you will now need
to locate a position to trade from and the only way is to get out there and look
for one, talk to your local council who may be able to offer help, talk to
business owners, talk to local DIY store managers who will probably put you in
touch with a catering concession company selling pitches (be very wary of over
inflated rentals on DIY stores and hidden charges to join associations) talk to
your local market organisers etc.
